Veasley to join new staff at CU

Aisha Veasley will join new University of Colorado women’s basketball coach Kathy McConnell-Miller on the bench after being part of McConnell- Miller’s original staff at Tulsa in 1999.

Veasley, 28, returns as an assistant coach after a two-year stint in private business and joins a Colorado staff she is more than familiar with.

She spent four seasons with the Golden Hurricane (1999- 2003) on a staff that included current CU assistants Bethann Shapiro Ord and Mike Neighbors.

CC gets ’08 West Regional

The NCAA has awarded the 2008 hockey West Regional to Colorado College, the second time the Tigers and the World Arena have hosted the regional.

Boulder cyclist wins

Peter Stetina of Boulder won the men’s 17-18 division at the Park City (Utah) Cycling festival on Thursday, finishing hand-in-hand with teammate and last year’s 15-16 division winner, Tejay Van Garderen of Boulder.

Coloradans claimed national championships at the festival: Danielle Haulman of Denver in the junior women’s 15-16, and Daniel Summerhill of Centennial in the junior men’s 15-16.

UNC soccer signs five

Northern Colorado women’s soccer coach Tim Barrera signed five players, including 5-foot-7 forward Jessica Zimmerman of Greeley Central High School. Other signees were Ashley Brumback of Eugene, Ore., Erin Kikumoto and Jordan Weeks of Mililani, Hawaii, and Patricia Wong of Honolulu.

Westfield winners

Steve Ziegler and Andrea Watts claimed titles at the Westfield PGA Junior Section Championship at Wellshire Golf Course.

Watts will represent Colorado at the national tournament in Ohio next month, but Ziegler will not be able to attend. Runner-up Daniel Mauer will take his place. Watts shot a 4-under-par 140 to beat Kayley Kempton by five strokes. Ziegler shot a 1-under 141 to beat Mauer by four strokes.

Free soccer

Officials will waive spectator entry fees for Saturday’s championship games at the 2005 U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Soccer Tournament at the Aurora Sports Park.
