New helmet puts kayakers’ safety first

Gil Turner is on a mission.

When his son Lucas Brandon Turner died in a kayaking accident on Idaho’s North Fork of the Payette River in July 1998, Turner launched a fight to increase the safety of white-water kayaking with the creation of a new paddling helmet.

Turner’s Whitewater Research & Safety Institute in Park City, Utah, has tapped Johns Hopkins University students in the creation of a patent-pending design, which Turner says will increase the safety of kayakers across the world.

The helmet not only is heavily armored to protect noggins, but the burly strap system prevents the helmet from slipping while under the force of a raging current. Best of all, buyers can sign up as a member of the institute for free and pay only $50 for the helmet.
