Jefferson County – A brush fire was burning this afternoon on top of a ridge in Waterton Canyon, on the south side of the Platte River. Its size was estimated at around 35 acres, but no homes or buildings were threatened.

Firefighters with the West Metro Fire Department were going to hike into the fire. But fire managers decided to attack the flames from the air instead. They sent in a helicopter and a small plane to drop retardant. As of 5:45 p.m., the aerial attack seemed to be getting the upper hand.

Smoke can be seen from the southwest metro area. The fire is believed to have been started by lightning.
