Denver prosecutors have until Aug. 3 to file paperwork to request extradition of the man accused of killing a police detective.

“We are at a point in the process where we are preparing the case file,” said district attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough.

Raul Gomez-Garcia, 20, was captured in Culiacán, Mexico, on June 4. He is accused of killing Denver police Detective Donald “Donnie” Young and wounding Detective John “Jack” Bishop on Mother’s Day.

Police reports, witness affidavits and other documents will be sent to authorities at the U.S. Department of Justice, which will ask Mexican authorities to extradite him.

The man accused of helping dispose of gun magazines and ammunition after the shootings is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 7 in Denver.

Jaime Arana-Del Angel, 27, told police he dug a hole in the backyard of a Denver home where Gomez-Garcia lived, according to a search-warrant affidavit. He said Gomez-Garcia then dropped in the magazines and ammunition.

Gomez-Garcia’s car was found in the backyard of his mother’s home in Los Angeles during the manhunt.

Denver police and federal authorities questioned family members, and three people were turned over to immigration authorities early this month. Gomez-Garcia’s father, Mercedes Gomez, and teenage sister, Ayde Gomez, were detained. Mercedes Gomez remains in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Ayde Gomez bonded out of custody.

Santiago Hernandez-Galvan, who was living with Gomez-Garcia’s aunt, also was turned over to immigration authorities.
