Play connect-the- cultural-dots

at quirky Belmar lectures

The Lab at Belmar director Adam Lerner can’t connect modern origami with American Indian pottery. Nor can he link the cryptic work of abstract expressionist painter Clyfford Still with the spicy secrets of Cajun cooking.

So why put them together in the highly irreverent Mixed Taste Tag Team Lecture series, Thursdays through Sept. 1? “Culture is not just the things you see in a museum, it’s also what you see in the supermarket, the scraps and patches of everyday life,” Lerner says.

Here’s how it works: Two experts, one microphone. Each speaker gets 30 minutes on a topic. The hour is followed with 30 minutes of Q&A on both. The result is an entertaining presentation of highfalutin topics.

The schmoozing starts Thursdays at about 6 p.m. at Flash Gallery, 7124 W. Alaska Drive in Lakewood, with drinks and snacks. (A pop-culture quiz gets you in free if you answer enough questions right; otherwise you pay $5.) The yakking follows at 6:30 p.m.

This week’s lecture features Modern Origami & Native American Pottery. The confab on Clyfford Still & Cajun Cuisine is July 28. Visit Belmarcolorado.com for information.
