Golden golfer leads Colorado Open qualifiers with 64
Grant Maples III of Golden shot a 7-under-par 64 on Wednesday and led 67 players at Riverdale Knolls Golf Course in Brighton trying to qualify for the Colorado Open.
The field produced 15 qualifiers for the July 28-31 tournament at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver.
Maples was among 12 players who finished with rounds in the 60s to gain spots in the Colorado Open. Five players tied at 1-under 70, forcing a playoff for the last three qualifiers.
Dan Sniffin of Castle Rock holed out from 100 yards – after putting his tee shot in a hazard on the first hole of the playoff – for a birdie and a place among the qualifiers.
Ray Rodriguez Jr. of Fort Morgan and Travis Williams of Erie parred the second playoff hole for the final two spots available in the qualifying round.
Huffer cruises to CWGA title
Becca Huffer of Overland Park Golf Course won her first state title, taking the CWGA Junior Stroke Play Championship at Spring Valley Golf Club.
Huffer finished the final round with an even-par 72 and a total score of 216, eight strokes ahead of runner-up Brooke Collins of Omni Interlocken, who closed with a 2-over 74.
Cherry Hills’ Moore among Match Play quarterfinalists
Kent Moore of Cherry Hills Country Club defeated Dan Silva of South Suburban Golf Course 5 and 3 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 105th CGA State Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club.
Moore will face off against Rick DeWitt of West Woods, who beat Danny Hahn of Raccoon Creek 4 and 3.
For DeWitt, the CGA Match Play is the only remaining CGA individual championship he has yet to win.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals was Ryan Husted of Highlands Ranch, who will play 15-year-old Tyler Parsloe of The Meadows.
Parsloe won the CGA Junior Match Play this year and could become the youngest CGA State Match Play champion in the history of the tournament.
