Broncos’ Davis Webb and Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes ‘still very, very close’

Denver’s play-caller and Kansas City’s star QB were teammates at Texas Tech. ‘I’m glad he’s healthy and I’m sure he’ll be ready to rock.’

Davis Webb is refraining from texting at least one of his college buddies this week.

That, of course, is Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback and the Broncos’ offensive coordinator were teammates for two seasons at Texas Tech in 2014-15.

In 2014, Webb was the Red Raiders’ starter until late October, when he injured his ankle. Mahomes, a freshman, took over and almost immediately became one of the stars of college football. Webb then backed up Mahomes in 2015 before transferring to Cal for the 2016 season.

The two have stayed close in the years since, as Mahomes blossomed into one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and Webb, a third-round pick in 2017, bounced around as a backup NFL quarterback before leaping into coaching.

He won’t be reaching out while the teams prepare, though.

“I don’t think I’m going to text Pat until pregame, then I’ll hit him up,” Webb said Thursday. “Thatap been kind of our tradition on game weeks. We always talk for a good 15 minutes. We were great teammates when he was a freshman, I was a sophomore, when he was a sophomore and I was a junior. Then he made me transfer out to Cal. But him and I are still really, really close. I love Pat.”

Webb said Mahomes is “like my younger brother.” The pair were the only scholarship quarterbacks at Texas Tech because

“Patap a great dude,” Webb said. “I’m glad he’s healthy and I’m sure he’ll be ready to rock.”

Mahomes isn’t the only close connection Webb has on the Chiefs’ staff. Kansas City defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator when Webb was a rookie quarterback there in 2017 and finished the season as the team’s interim head coach.

“I was, like, his scout team quarterback,” Webb said. “So back in the day, only the defensive players and myself got banana pudding from his wife. I miss ‘Spags.’ He’s a great dude.

“He’s one of the best defensive coordinators in this game’s history and it’ll be a tough challenge for us out of the gate.”
