Who: Left: Gail Geibel, NYC, Clair Beckmann and Ron Nixon of Louisville, Colorado and Phyllis Sharp and Robert Jacobowitz of Denver, Colorado
Where: Tongatapu Island
Out and about: This stone monument at Heketa was carved from coral limestone around 1200 A.D. Notches carved on the top lintel may indicate that it was a solar observatory used to determine the equinoxes.
Travel tip: Tonga is less developed than some South Pacific retreats such as Fiji, but being able to sail to uninhabited islands and snorkel in turquoise waters easily makes up for any inconvenience. We had hoped to snorkel with whales (although we weren’t sure how to take our picture without getting the paper wet!) but most of them had already headed south.
