EchoStar Communications Corp. said it would lower its Dish Network monthly rates in six cities in an effort to best cable competitors.

The Douglas County-based satellite-television company has begun a 30-day campaign offering one year of basic Dish service – more than 60 channels – for $19.99 in Atlanta; Dallas; Kansas City, Mo.; Indianapolis; Pittsburgh; and Sacramento, Calif. After one year, the price jumps to $31.99 a month.

The offer, which expires Aug. 15, applies to new customers and comes with free installation and hardware, which includes a free digital video recorder. New subscribers in these areas would also receive premium channels HBO and Showtime free for three months.

After the promotion, customers will have to dish out an additional $22.99 a month for the two channels.

EchoStar would not discuss its strategy behind the cost cutting, and did not say why Colorado cities were not part of the promotion, or if the state would be included in future ones.

“When we have those plans set, we’ll announce them,” EchoStar spokesman Mark Cicero said.
