Who: Irv and Judy Rollman of Highlands Ranch
Where: Pisa, Italy
Out and about: We stopped in Pisa between Rome and Cinque Terre, as we were told it probably wasn’t worth spending more time than a few hours on-site. We found this advice to be true. It seems that everything in Italy costs money (including sitting down to eat a meal – a “cover charge” is charged for each diner), and Pisa was no exception, as there was a charge to climb the tower or tour the church (we didn’t do either). There are few places to sit and relax (without paying, that is). Drink plenty of water, available from public fountains (free!). People in general are friendly and speak enough English to communicate.
Travel tip: Take public transportation – Europe has an impressive infrastructure that makes almost anything accessible by train or bus with minimal inconvenience. Don’t be afraid of people – we met some great people on our trip. One final bit of advice – Rick Steves’ guidebooks!
