Who: Jim and Sandra Lund of Aurora
Where: Kyoto, Japan
Out and about: Kinkaku (Golden Pavilion) is a popular name for one of the main buildings of this temple, which is properly called Rokuon-ji Temple. In the 1220s it was the comfortable villa of Kintsune Saionji. The second and third floors are covered with gold leaf on Japanese lacquer. The beautiful city of Kyoto contains many ancient temples, shrines and castles, some of which date back to A.D. 700-800. Kyoto was intentionally not bombed during World War II in an effort to preserve these historical and religious sites.
Travel tip: Do not miss the opportunity to walk along many of the narrow, ancient streets with their quaint shops offering all sorts of souvenirs and food. If needed, taxis are easily found, and fares are quite reasonable. In addition, although tipping is a courtesy, it is not required or expected for taxis or restaurants.
