Former Fort Collins High School athlete Sarah Stevens won the shot put at the Pan Am Junior Championships on Saturday in Windsor, Ontario, with a heave of 52 feet, 9 inches. Stevens was a redshirt at Arizona State last season.
Summit High School grad Whitney Anderson, who will attend Duke in the fall, finished third in Sunday’s 5,000 meters (17 minutes, 4.22 seconds).
Chealsea Taylor, who graduated this spring from Montbello and will attend Alabama in the fall, finished third in Sunday’s high jump (5-9) and was the top American. Kira Robinson, who graduated from Mullen this spring and will attend Texas this fall, finished fourth in Friday’s 110-meter hurdles.
Miller defends title
Bryce Miller narrowly defended his first-place ranking and won the saddle bronc title with a wild ride at Cheyenne Frontier Days on Sunday.
Minutes earlier, Billy Etbauer of Edmond, Okla., launched into a ride that made the near-capacity crowd roar. Etbauer scored an 89; he had needed only a 69 to advance to first from his second-place standing after the first two rounds.
But then Miller, who then needed at least an 88 to win, also scored an 89.
Hansen wins at I-76
John Hansen of Brush won the modified main event at I-76 Speedway on Saturday in Fort Morgan, his third straight victory.
McKienzie leads U.S.
Dave McKienzie of Littleton scored a match-high 25 points to lead the United States men’s volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Argentina in Gualeguaychu, Argentina.
