Tour commemorates Hiroshima
A Western Slope coalition of community organizations, churches and citizens will travel in a caravan today and Saturday to the state’s “uranium hot spots” to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan.
The caravan will begin at Rulison, where an underground atomic bomb was detonated in 1969 to free trapped oil and gas. After winding through Mesa County, where uranium was processed, the caravan will head to Uravan, where the uranium was mined and milled, and will end up in Cañon City at the Cotter Corp. uranium mill.
Ceremonies will be conducted along the way, and paper cranes will be collected and sent to Hiroshima. The crane project is in conjunction with other tours and ceremonies around the world. For more information on the project, call 970-243- 0209, ext. 311.
