Rudy Martin, formerly a longtime figure in Jefferson County schoolboy basketball, has returned to the coaching ranks.
Martin replaces Bruce Dick as coach of Green Mountain’s boys team. Dick, a 24-year coach who led the Rams to a state title in the 1991-92 season, did not have his contract renewed for 2005-06. Jeffco officials ruled that Dick, football coach Don McGatlin and wrestling coach Jim Opperman (also the school’s athletic director) violated district policies concerning payment of assistant coaches last spring in track, and Dick’s appeal recently was turned down.
Martin, head man at Jeffco’s Columbine for 15 seasons, has 22 years experience, including two as an assistant at Green Mountain. He will do the Rams’ job on a one-year interim basis, then decide with school officials if it works for him, the program and his family. Martin, whose last basketball season was in 1999-2000, teaches at the district’s Chatfield and is the Chargers’ boys golf coach.
“I feel good about it,” Martin said of getting back into basketball.
