Fazekas helps U.S. roll in hoops
Nick Fazekas, a former Ralston Valley High School star, helped the U.S. under-21 basketball team rout Puerto Rico 99-79 on Saturday at the world championship tournament in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
Now starring at Nevada, where he was named Western Athletic Conference player of the year as a sophomore last season, the 6-foot-11 Fazekas scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds for the U.S.
The Americans, 6-1 in the FIBA tournament, play today for fifth place.
Hayes holds lead
in CGA tournament
Columbine Country Club’s John Hayes, a former Colorado State golfer, shot a third-round, 1-under-par 70 to lead the Colorado Golf Association State Amateur Championship tournament at Glenmoor Country Club in Cherry Hills Village.
Hayes, who shot a course- record, 7-under 64 on Friday, leads 19-year-old Colorado freshman Derek Tolan of South Suburban, Nate Pettitt of Collindale and Michael Baird of Red Hawk Ridge by three strokes.
Boulder duo wins race
Colby Pearce and Chad Hartley of Boulder, riding for Team TIAA-CREF, won the men’s madison, a 160-lap, 40-kilometer race, at the USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships in Carson, Calif., on Saturday.
Giddeon Massie of Colorado Springs teamed with Michael Blatchford of Cypress, Calif., and Aaron Kacala of Racine, Wis., on Team Veloworx to finish second in the men’s team sprint, eight-tenths of a second behind the winners.
