Shelf Road is a sort of climbing resort. With almost 1,000 bolted roots, the limestone crags outside Cañon City offer sport climbers a buffet of year-round options. With recent route development, Shelf Road has seen resurgence in popularity. Climbing gurus Fred Knapp, Rick Thompson and Rich Aschert’s “Shelf Road Rock: A Complete Reference” documents the recent route additions, making it the area’s bible. The 256-page tome – penned by guardians of the crags who not only helped develop a large number of routes at Shelf Road, but helped spearhead the 1998 Access Fund land acquisition that nearly doubled the climbing potential along Shelf Road – includes the classics as well as the newest crack and face lines. At the rate of route development, the trio of climbers will probably be back soon with an updated edition.
