Who: Brian, Mari, Jessica and Connie Anderson of Greenwood Village

Where: Lake Titicaca

Out and About: Thirteen and 14 years ago we adopted girls from Peru. We toured the country now that they are old enough to appreciate their heritage. It was particularly interesting to get into some of the smaller cities in the Andes, away from the bustle of Lima. Here, we are at the floating reed islands of the Uros people in Lake Titicaca. Coloradans are proud of their fourteeners, but at one point we were on a train that crossed a pass at 14,176 feet, and we were looking up at the mountains. Three cities we stayed in were at about 12,000 feet. We saw Incan ruins, giant condors, a canyon deeper than the Grand Canyon and boated on the highest navigable lake in the world.

Travel tip: Peru has a well-developed tourist industry and is relatively inexpensive. More tourists are traveling there because it is perceived as being safe from terrorism. Take a list of your friends’ e-mail addresses; there are Internet cafes everywhere, and they typically charge only 30 cents an hour. Cusco and Machu Picchu are the don’t-miss places to go.
