NCAA gives extra season to CSU’s Robinson
Freddy Robinson, a 6-foot-5 forward on the Colorado State men’s basketball team, has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA and will be a junior for the Rams this season.
Robinson played in the 2001- 02 and 2003-04 seasons. He missed most of his sophomore season (2002-03) with a back injury and sat out the entire 2004-05 season when he suffered an Achilles tendon injury last August. He previously was awarded a medical hardship year for his sophomore season.
Lone Tree golfer third
in junior tournament
Andrea Watts of Lone Tree is tied for third, four strokes off the lead, after shooting a 3-over-par 73 in the first round of the CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior tournament at French Creek Golf Club in Elverson, Pa. The tournament, which concludes Thursday, is sponsored by the American Junior Golf Association.
DU teams high in polls
The University of Denver women’s soccer team was picked to finish second in the Sun Belt Conference race this season, behind defending champion North Texas, in a poll of Sun Belt coaches.
DU juniors Laura Mann of Fort Collins and Lleane Grimditch of Boulder and sophomore Jenna Billingsley of Littleton were selected to the preseason all-Sun Belt team. Grimditch was selected preseason player of the year for the second consecutive year.
DU’s volleyball team was picked to finish first this season in the Sun Belt’s West Division in a poll of Sun Belt coaches.
The Pioneers open their season Sept. 2 against Bowling Green at the Illinois-Chicago Invitational. After four matches in that tournament, the Pioneers play their home opener Sept. 6 against Colorado State.
The Western State men’s cross country team ranked first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s preseason poll of league coaches, with Adams State placing second and CU- Colorado Springs third.
On the women’s side, Adams State ranked first in the coaches poll followed by Western State, CU-Colorado Springs and Colorado Mines.
