Lakewood – There is a first time for everything, and the so-called Zero Week – typically filled with lackluster offense, turnovers, penalties and yawns – produced a classic.
Bear Creek unveiled a triple-threat offense and racked up big yardage, and Mullen scored two touchdowns behind junior quarterback Clint Brewster in the final 6:31 to tie the game.
In the end, Aromous Robinson caught the winning two-point conversion pass from Jake Spitzlberger in the far corner of the end zone for a 36-35 double-overtime victory over top-ranked Mullen.
“It was great. Friday night lights, that’s what it’s all about,” said Robinson, who caught nine passes for 106 yards with a touchdown in regulation, and also hauled in a touchdown catch in the first overtime.
In his first start, Spitzlberger was a wizard, completing 13-of-17 passes for 130 yards and rushing for another 100 and five touchdowns, including two in overtime.
“That was all him. I just threw it up there,” Spitzlberger said of Robinson’s catch in the second overtime.
Bears running back Riley Newcomer ran for 80 yards to complete the three-headed offensive monster.
After the first half ended in a 7-7 tie, things got wild.
Bear Creek opened the third quarter with a 15-play, 80-yard drive that lasted 8:48 and ended with a 1-yard run by Spitzlberger. The Bears looked to have the game in hand when they stopped Mullen’s offense, which generated a paltry 9 yards rushing in regulation, and then scored on a 22-yard pass from Spitzlberger to Robinson with 8:25 left.
But the Mustangs rallied behind San Diego product Brewster, son of Broncos assistant coach Tim Brewster. The junior quarterback completed 13-of-14 passes for 200 yards, including a 12-yarder to Phillip Morelli with 6:31 left. Morelli finished with seven catches for 57 yards. Teammate Devin Aguilar grabbed eight catches for 133 yards.
“I was feeling great from the beginning,” Brewster said. “I hit Devin on the first pass of the game, and it just kept getting better.”
Mullen tied the score on a 10-yard run by Jarret Hullum with 1:57 to play, and it was on to overtime.
But Caleb Pavy’s extra point barely made it over the crossbar.
The teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime, and Mullen went up by seven points in the second before Robinson’s catch. He went up over a defender and landed his left foot on the pylon for the win.
