The University of Colorado volleyball team, behind Nicole Carr’s 17 kills, beat American University in three games Saturday to win the championship match of the American Volleyball Classic in Washington.
Allie Griffin and Amber Sutherland each had 15 kills. Carr was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
In the semifinals, CU (2-0) beat St. Peter’s (N.J.) College in three games. Griffin and Sutherland each had 12 kills.
Wyoming soccer team notches first victory
The University of Wyoming soccer team rolled over Charleston Southern 3-0 at home for its first victory of the season.
Freshman Tamika Wilson scored two goals, with the first coming in the 21st minute.
Freshman Comfort Adetoye scored a goal and had an assist for the Cowgirls. Wyoming outshot the Lady Bucs 28-1.
Adams State falls
The Adams State volleyball team, playing in the Lady Buff Classic in Canyon, Texas, lost in straight games to West Texas A&M in the third game of the tournament.
Sophomores Brittany Muchmore, of Peoria, Ariz., had 13 kills and Lindsey Clason, a Pueblo West graduate, had 40 assists for the Grizzlies (1-2).
McKienzie sparks U.S.
Littleton’s Dave McKienzie scored a team-high eight points to lead the U.S. national volleyball team to a three-game semifinal victory over Guatemala in the FIVB world championship qualification tournament in Caguas, Puerto Rico.
With the win, the U.S. qualified for the 2006 world championships in Japan beginning Nov. 16.
The United States will play Puerto Rico in today’s championship match.
Eagles sign goalie
The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League on Friday announced the signing of Paulo Colaiacovo, the goaltender who won the final two games of the CHL Finals against the Laredo Bucks in May.
The Eagles have 11 players under contract for the upcoming season, including 10 players from their championship season.
