Golden – Colorado School of Mines fell behind by 14 points to Washburn (Kan.) and couldn’t recover Saturday, losing 28-17 at Brooks Field.
Washburn (1-0) led 21-3 at halftime behind three touchdown passes from Jordan Brill to San Sissom. The two hooked up for a 62-yard score 27 seconds into the game. Less than five minutes later, Brill and Sissom teamed on an 82-yard strike.
Mines was stopped in the second on a fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line. Brill then led the Ichabods on a seven-play, 97-yard drive that ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Sissom. Mines quarterback Garrett Mehl threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Corey Huck on the opening drive of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 21-10.
Angelo State 26, Western State 7
Gunnison – Kyle Fox returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Dennis Lee added a 99-yard fumble recovery for a score to lead Angelo (Texas) State to a win over Western State.
Western State allowed Fox to score on the first play of the third quarter to open a 26-0 second-half run. In the fourth, Lee forced Western State quarterback Dan Brethauer to fumble at the goal line, then ran 99 yards for a 13-7 lead. Western State’s only score came in the first quarter, when Brethauer threw a 15-yard TD pass to Chris Clark.
Western Washington 49, Mesa State 20
Grand Junction – Western Washington scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter and cruised past Mesa State. The Vikings’ Sly Whitfield blocked a field-goal attempt with no time remaining in the first half and ran 76 yards for a touchdown. Mesa State’s Drew Bohannan threw three touchdown passes in the loss.
