CANON CITY GHOST WALK

The Canon City Ghost Walk, a historic walking tour of the downtown area, begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday through Monday. The tours, about a 15-block walk led by a guide in period costume, start in May and continue through Labor Day weekend every year.

Many stories have been told about ghosts living in certain buildings, and although sponsored by the Museum of Colorado Prisons, the ghost walk is not focused only on correctional facilities.

Historic information and artifacts about Colorado prisons are housed in the Museum of Colorado Prisons, which is in the cell house of the original Women’s Correctional Facility constructed in 1935.

The Territorial Prison in Canon City received its first inmate June 13, 1871. In April 1874, the prison was officially transferred to the territory of Colorado by the U.S. government and became known as the Colorado State Penitentiary.

For information on the Ghost Walk or the prison museum, call 719-269-3015.
