Millionaire Democratic donor Tim Gill stood next to Republican Gov. Bill Owens on Friday and announced $1 million in matching grants to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief.

The Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado, part of the Gill Foundation, will match donations of up to $250 from individual Coloradans.

The Gill/Owens announcement says, “This tragedy is bigger than political divisions, it’s bigger than divisions based on race, based on sexual orientation or anything else.”

“Those least able to afford it will be the ones that have the hardest time recovering,” Gill said.

Owens said Coloradans need to respond to the disaster “with generosity.”

“I urge every Coloradan to go online today and help spend Tim’s money,” Owens said.

Christine Benero of the Mile High Chapter of the American Red Cross said, “Mr. Gill, today you and the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado saved lives.”
