Cortez – Firefighters evacuated 10 homes northeast of Cortez on Friday afternoon due to a fire burning through 70 acres of live and beetle-killed piñon trees.

The fire, first reported at 1 p.m. Friday, was on private and public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management between Stinking Springs and Cash canyons. The fire started east of Totem Lake between county roads 32 and 34.

Crews from several federal and local agencies were seeking to contain the blaze. An unknown number of structures were potentially at risk from the fire Friday afternoon, Forest Service spokeswoman Ann Bond said.
