Travelers really don’t need an extra reason to visit Lyons; the funky, sweet foothills town north of Boulder pretty much has it all – from top-flight scenery to the family-owned Lyons Soda Fountain that has been around since the 1920s. But here’s an excuse: the Water and Stone Artists Collective’s Sculpture Trail comes down on Sept. 19.

The “urban” trail begins at The Barking Dog Cafe, where you chip in $1 for a guidebook to 26 sculptural installations. Some are very serious (No. 18, Kristine Smock’s stunning High Water Mark Dreaming), others are firmly tongue-in-cheek (No. 19, John King’s Town Chi Pumps “to promote effective decisionmaking and good government.”)

Sculpture Trail through Lyons: An easy 45 minutes to 1 hour on foot. From Interstate 25, exit 243 at the north edge of Longmont and head west on Colo. 66 for 16 miles to the Barking Dog Cafe, 447 Main St. in Lyons.
