An openly gay Montrose man found dead in a city park July 30 died from a lack of oxygen to the brain after “compression of structures in the neck,” according to an initial autopsy report released Friday.

The Montrose County coroner’s office on Friday reported the manner of Kevin Hale’s death as a homicide and the cause as “cerebral anoxia.”

Adam Hernandez, 21, and Jason Todd Fiske, 24, both of Montrose, have been charged with robbing and murdering Hale early July 30 after they had been playing pool in a nearby pub. In a statement to police, Fiske recounted a fight in which he put Hale in chokehold until he collapsed.

The coroner’s office said it would have no further comment until a final autopsy is completed by a pathologist.
