Ex-Interior secretary to speak

Bruce Babbitt, secretary of the interior under President Clinton, makes his case for a new national land-use policy at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the American Alpine Club, 710 10th St., Golden.

Learn how Sheriff’s Office works

Applications are being taken for a 10-week citizens academy that gives Jefferson County residents and businesspeople firsthand information about how the Sheriff’s Office operates.

The classroom work, combined with field trips and tours, begins Wednesday and requires a commitment of one night a week from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Boulder climber to be honored

Gerry Roach of Boulder will receive the Francis P. Farquhar Mountaineering Award from the Sierra Club at a ceremony tonight in San Francisco.

Roach is among the national award winners the organization announced Thursday. Other national honorees include Robert F. Kennedy Jr., U.S. Rep. Nancy Johnson, R-Conn., and wildlife photographer Larry Allen of Sarasota, Fla.

Roach, a Boulder resident since 1953, climbed Mount Everest in 1983. He went on to become the second person to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents in 1985. In 2000, he became the first person to climb the 10 highest peaks in North America. Roach has climbed more than 1,200 named peaks in Colorado.
