Boulder – The 8:10 p.m. start for Colorado’s game against New Mexico State on Saturday may have been too late for some in a 85 percent filled Folsom Field, but not for CU athletic director Mike Bohn.
Bohn likes the idea of a late start in September.
“We really welcome the opportunity to play in the evening at this time of year because, obviously as we saw (against Colorado State), it can be very warm,” Bohn said. “And it’s an opportunity for us to put on a little extra show with fireworks for the fans.
“Obviously, a national TV audience is also very important to us as well.”
The game featured a halftime fireworks show and was televised by Fox Sports Net.
The Mountain West Conference terminated its relationship with Fox Sports and signed a television contract with College Sports Television, which will broadcast all MWC games starting in 2006, in part because it desired to get away from late starts.
Bohn, who was the athletic director at MWC member San Diego State before coming to CU this year, doesn’t see the late starts as a problem. Asked whether there will be more early-season 8 p.m. starts in CU’s future, Bohn said, “Yes.”
Pass the record book
Joel Klatt became the third CU quarterback to throw for 5,000 yards in his career. Klatt, a senior who stands third on CU’s all-time passing chart at 5,148 yards, joins Koy Detmer (5,390) and Kordell Stewart (6,481).
After going 18-of-25 for 186 yards and two touchdowns against the Aggies, Klatt passed Stewart (456) for first place in CU career completions at 465.
Footnotes
Colorado cornerback Gardner McKay and defensive lineman George Hypolite, both true freshmen, saw their first action of the season. McKay was used on special teams against New Mexico State, mainly as a gunner in CU’s punt coverage. Hypolite played some on the defensive line and contributed a second-quarter sack on a third-down play, which forced the Aggies to punt. … CU donated $1,000 for each of kicker Mason Crosby’s two first-half field goals to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, in partnership with Allstate.
