Colorado’s volleyball team improved to 4-1 on Saturday by edging Marquette in five games, 30-24, 23-30, 30-18, 28-30, 15-11 at the Coors Events Center.

Allie Griffin’s 23 kills and Amber Sutherland’s 20 led the Buffs’ offense. Nicole Carr, with 17 digs, paced the defense.

“A game-five experience is a good experience for us,” Colorado coach Pi’i Aiu said. “It would have been better if we had just taken care of business, but they are a good team.”

Rams block Hokies in tournament

Behind a solid defense, the Colorado State volleyball team swept Virginia Tech in three games in the Hilton Classic at Moby Arena.

The Rams won 31-29, 30-24, 30-26 to even their season record at 3-3. The Rams notched 17 blocks, as freshman Ashley Fornstrom led with four.

Grizzlies run away in New Mexico meet

The Adams State men’s and women’s cross country teams captured titles at the University of New Mexico’s Lobo Invitational.

The women placed nine runners in the top 18, including Victoria Martinez, who finished second. The men put three runners in the top seven. Jesus Solis and Mario Macias finished third and fourth, respectively.

Reser bows out of judo world championships

Ryan Reser of Colorado Springs advanced to the second round of the World Judo Championships in Cairo by beating Algeria’s Nourredine Yagoubi by a half-point. Reser was then eliminated by 2004 Olympic bronze medalist and top seed Kiyoshi Uematsu of Spain.
