A Golden soldier is dead after coming under attack in Baghdad on
Wednesday.

Pfc. Henry C. Risner, 26, was working a military checkpoint when he
came under fire. He was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division out
of Fort Drum, N.Y.

Risner joined the Army nearly two years ago to earn money for
college and wanted to become a firefighter, his father said
Thursday.

Another soldier told his family Risner was shot while he and other
soldiers were passing out candy to children, said Risner’s father,
Gerald Risner.

“He’s one of these boys who, when anybody needed help, he was
right there. He was just extremely protective of other people who
were in trouble,” Gerald Risner said.

Henry Risner’s wife, who was expected to travel from Fort Drum to
Golden to discuss memorial plans, is expecting a baby in January or
February, Gerald Risner said.
