Fest spiced up with salsa contest

The city of Thornton is looking for some good salsa.

Always a hot event, a salsa-making contest will take place at the annual Harvest Fest. The deadline to enter is Friday. It costs $10 for Thornton residents to enter, $15 for nonresidents. Would-be salsa savants must be at least 18 years old and make at least 3 gallons of salsa from their own recipe.

Contestants can pick up an entry form at the Carpenter Recreation Center, 11151 Colorado Blvd., or call 720-977-5916.

Harvest Fest will be Sept. 24 and will feature a pancake breakfast, fishing derby, skateboarding competition and wagon rides.

There is a crafts fair and a Hispanic cultural tent, as well as a food court.

JEFFERSON COUNTY

Items sought for animal benefit

Donations are being taken at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 W. Sixth Ave., for the Sept. 24-25 Table Mountain Animal Center’s Furry Friends Flea Market.

Tax-deductible items that may be dropped off through Sept. 21 include books, CDs, pet supplies and equipment, baby and children’s clothes, housewares, toys, games, furniture, antiques and jewelry.

Volunteers will be on hand to assist with donations from 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. From the service road, turn left on McIntyre Street and enter the first gate on the left.

The flea market will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 24 and Sept. 25, with an early-bird preview from 7 to 9 a.m. Sept. 24. General admission is $1, with children free.

LARIMER COUNTY

County hires first justice manager

Angela Erker of Fort Collins has been named Larimer County’s first criminal justice coordinator, a position she starts Sept. 29.

Erker brings 14 years of experience working in the criminal justice system. She will be responsible for identifying issues, developing strategies, monitoring data, tracking legislation and coordinating matters that affect the criminal justice system in Larimer County, said county spokeswoman Deni La Rue.

For the past seven years, Erker has worked as probation officer and community resource coordinator for the 8th Judicial District.

She also has worked in the court systems in Denver and Adams County.
