When Air Force plays Utah on Thursday night, Wyoming coach Joe Glenn will be more than content to watch the game rather than participate in it.
Wyoming is the only Front Range Mountain West Conference team that doesn’t play on a Thursday or Friday this season, and that’s just fine with Glenn.
“I’m absolutely for Saturday football,” Glenn said. “I’m so old-school. Friday is for high school football, Saturday is for college football, and Sunday and Monday night are for pro football. It’s great exposure to play on Wednesday night, Thursday night and that stuff. … I’m just not a big proponent of bastardizing the game. … I abhor that. … And if that’s old-school, then that’s who I am.”
But, Joe, what about the exposure? What about the potential recruits who get to see you on TV?
“Do I think it’s going to change our recruiting? Heck, no,” Cowboy Joe said. “We’re going to get the guys we get and coach them up.” …
So it’s official then. ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth has been booted out of the Big Lug Club. Schlereth, listed at 289 during his final days with the Broncos, is down to 216. That’s one more pound than Todd Sauerbrun, who at 5-feet-11 is 4 inches shorter than Schlereth. …
Priest Holmes on Fox’s “The Best Damn Sports Show Period,” when asked about those infamous costume-wearing Raiders fans in the Black Hole: “Halloween comes a little sooner in Oakland.” …
How good are the Indians? Their leadoff hitter, Grady Sizemore, has 20 homers. So does their No. 9 hitter, Casey Blake. Trust me, the seven guys in between aren’t half-bad, either. …
Says here the White Sox are just good enough to hold on in the AL Central. They’ve made a habit of being just good enough, witness their 32-17 record in one-run games. The Indians are 21-30. …
With all this hubbub surrounding Avs newcomer Brad May, I decided to do some heavy-duty research on him. What’s that? OK, OK, I bought KKFN’s Sandy Clough a beer and he did the research for me. Anyway, May barely qualified as a fourth-line grinder with the Canucks, averaging 8 minutes, 55 seconds of ice time in 2003-04. …
The Redskins came from 13 down in the closing minutes to beat the Cowboys on Monday night. Nothing unusual there. Or not. According to those trusty number crunchers at the Elias Sports Bureau, the loss marked the first time the Cowboys had coughed up a double-figure lead in the fourth quarter at home. …
Let me see if I’ve got this straight. Mike Tice‘s seat is on fire and Joe Gibbs is the one who gets doused by his players? …
You don’t suppose the Dolphins are starting to think they drafted the wrong Auburn running back, do you? Nah, didn’t think so. Cadillac Williams has 276 rushing yards and is averaging 5.4 yards a carry. Ronnie Brown, meanwhile, has 34 carries for 92 yards, 2.7 a crack. …
Dolphins coach Nick Saban, when asked by The Miami Herald about his struggling rookie, “I’m not disappointed. I’m not upset. I’m not angry. I’m not tired of Ronnie Brown. I’m not nothing.” …
Trying to handicap the CU-Miami game? Don’t bother. Stuff happens when the Hurricanes hit the field. They’ve scored on 52 returns (interceptions, punts, etc.) in the past seven seasons, more than any team in college football. The Buffs? They’ve scored on 34 returns and have intercepted 14 passes in their past five games, dating to last year’s Nebraska game. …
E-mailer, upset at the prospect of Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron‘s home run record: “Next time Mr. Happy hits one into McCovey Cove, institute PGA rules. Make him play it where it lies.”
