Broomfield – Nick Hiseler’s goal Tuesday for Mountain View was either magical or luck, depending on your allegiance.

The fact that it was the only goal scored against Broomfield renders all that moot.

Hiseler somehow sneaked the ball past Eagles goalie Alex Hanson in the 50th minute as the sixth-ranked Mountain Lions defeated No. 2 Broomfield 1-0 in a physical Class 4A Northern League scrap.

“We’ve been waiting for this for four years,” senior Mountain View goalie Dexter Stahl said. “I remember Broomfield has beat us every year up until now. We finally got it back.”

Stahl made just four saves and survived a penalty kick unscathed as the Loveland-based Mountain Lions (8-0, 2-0 in league) notched their seventh shutout of the season.

The Mountain Lions played the role of spoilers perfectly. They weathered Broomfield’s early onslaught and then began to wear down the home team with tenacious, physical play that threatened to turn into bedlam on several occasions.

Hiseler’s goal was a shining example.

The senior chased a ball played back toward Hanson and managed to get around the defender trying to shield him away in time to strike the ball from a seemingly impossible angle.

“It went right around the goalie,” Hiseler said. “I don’t know how it happened. I just pulled the defender around and slipped it through.”

For the Eagles (6-1, 1-1), it was a cruel reminder of the fickle nature of the game. Broomfield dominated the game early but seemed to look too often for another perfect pass than a shot on goal. Even when the Eagles did shoot, most of their attempts blazed high into the night.

“We allowed Mountain View to stick around,” Broomfield coach Jim Davidson said. “We lacked concentration all evening.”

Broomfield had a chance to level the score in the 65th minute when standout midfielder Ryan Aweida was knocked down in the penalty area trying to get to a cross.

Aweida took the subsequent penalty kick but missed the goal with a low shot to his right.

“I’ve never seen Ryan miss one,” Davidson said. “It was a good take, he just missed the frame. I don’t fault him.”
