Ducks Unlimited pledge

Ducks Unlimited, which specializes in wetlands restoration, will spend $15 million to help restore coastal wetlands in Louisiana damaged by Hurricane Katrina. “To get people’s lives back to normal as quickly as possible requires not only that services and homes be restored and rebuilt, but also that the critical coastal wetlands that help protect those homes be restored, too,” DU president Jim Hulbert said. “Wetlands restoration is what Ducks Unlimited does best.” DU’s pledge will be used in partnership with other conservation organizations and federal agencies in restoring 52,000 acres by 2008.

More firewood

Amid projections of soaring energy costs, the Colorado Division of Wildlife will host a free firewood-gathering day Saturday at its Dome Rock State Wildlife Area, located between Cripple Creek and Florissant west of Colorado Springs. Gathering for Douglas fir, ponderosa pine and blue spruce already cut to create better wildlife habitat will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saws are required to cut these trees into manageable units. Four-wheel drive vehicles are required, and no trailers are allowed.
