Bonds raises issue
In the nation’s capital on his first road trip of 2005, Barry Bonds questioned why Congress, the media and fans continue to talk about steroids. “I think we have other issues in this country to worry about that are a lot more serious. I think you guys should direct your efforts into taking care of that,” the San Francisco Giants slugger said Tuesday before facing the Washington Nationals. “Talk about the athletes that are helping Katrina.” Told of Bonds’ comments, Dave Marin, a spokesman for House Government Reform Committee chairman Tom Davis, R-Va., said: “Members of Congress, particularly Tom Davis, can walk and chew gum at the same time.”

Race car driver Robby Gordon, who Monday was fined $35,000 by NASCAR for throwing his helmet at Michael Waltrip’s car and cursing during an ensuing television interview Sunday at New Hampshire International Speedway, announced Tuesday he is auctioning the helmet on eBay to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. “I’m still angry about getting wrecked intentionally, but at the end of the day I still have a house to go home to, which is a lot more than a lot of people can say,” Gordon said. “I hope people will dig deep and think of the big picture when they’re bidding on the helmet.” Bidding, which ends next Tuesday, had reached $100,500 after 190 bids as of 6 p.m.

Notes Randy Turner of the Winnipeg Free Press: “In a related story, in order to improve his game, Terrell Owens said he’s going to decapitate himself.”
