Florida Marlins slugger Miguel Cabrera left Wednesday night’s game against the New York Mets in the first inning after fouling a ball off his knee at Shea Stadium.

Cabrera completed his at-bat, striking out before leaving with a bruised left knee. He was replaced in the lineup by rookie Joe Dillon, a September call-up.

Cabrera was third in the National League in batting at .321 and third in RBIs with 111. He has 32 home runs and was second in the league with 187 hits. His 327 total bases are a Marlins record.

Mike Lowell was slated to make his first career start at second base, but he took his regular position at third base in the bottom of the first to replace Cabrera. Dillon entered at second base.

Tigers: Right-hander Jeremy Bonderman will miss the remainder of the season because of a sore elbow. Bonderman, 1-7 in his past eight starts, missed two September outings with a tender elbow before starting Monday at Kansas City.

He gave up seven runs on 11 hits, including Matt Stairs’ three-run homer, in 4 2/3 innings.

“Bonderman is not going to pitch the rest of the season,” manager Alan Trammell said. “We made that decision just before the game. He was going to go out and throw on the side. He just didn’t feel up to it. We started asking questions. He’s saying he just doesn’t feel right, so we shut him down.”

Bonderman finished the season 14-13 with a 4.57 ERA.

Orioles: Second baseman Brian Roberts has ligament and tendon damage in his left arm and will need surgery that usually requires a recovery time of about six months.
