A pit bull escaped from its Centennial home Saturday and attacked an Australian shepherd being walked by its female owner.

A neighbor who responded to the attack was arrested after allegedly threatening to shoot the pit bull and assaulting the dog’s owner, Tony Baker, 31.

The neighbor, Shawn Boyd, 35, allegedly pointed a handgun at the pit bull, named Cali, then assaulted Baker, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said.

The attack happened at 4 p.m. at 5193 S. Netherland Way after a child opened a door and the pit bull ran out and attacked the woman, who wasn’t identified.

The pit bull bit the woman on her finger and the shepherd on its stomach, police said.

Baker, who had been working on a car parked in his driveway, immediately separated his dog from the shepherd and its owner.

When Baker tried to carry the pit bull home, police said, Boyd pointed a gun at the pit bull and at Baker. He then allegedly kicked Baker and struck him on the head with the gun.

Baker told police he got the pit bull from a friend in Denver who couldn’t keep it there.

Arapahoe Animal Control impounded the dog and cited Baker for harboring a vicious dog and allowing the dog to run loose.

Boyd was held in the Arapahoe County detention center.
