For many years, Sue Christiansen has worked long and hard to coordinate the National Western Stock Show’s scholarship program and special events.

And while she isn’t comfortable at the center of attention, she’s going to have to get used to it as she retires in February, and all the people who consider her a friend aren’t going to let her departure go unnoticed.

The first round of good wishes came at the Hide Party, a dinner honoring those who purchased grand champions at the 2005 Auction of Junior Livestock Champions. More are sure to follow when the 100th National Western opens in January.

Denver City Councilwoman Elbra Wedgeworth, along with NFL Alumni Association president Leroy Mitchell and a host of local pro athletes, are among those planning to attend an eight-bout boxing match Oct. 1 at the Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center. The USA Amateur Boxing-sanctioned event is preceded by a VIP reception with food from area restaurants and tours; for ticket information, call 303-333-5943. Organizers of the Oct. 1 High Hopes Tribute Dinner, benefiting the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes, were overjoyed to learn that honoree Barbara Davis and at least three of her children will be coming to Denver to take part in the gala that stars comedian Bob Newhart. The family will stay on for the Oct. 2 dedication of the Barbara Davis Center’s new home on the former Fitzsimons Army Base. The Kempe Children’s Foundation Alliance is having its fall membership luncheon Thursday at Denver Country Club; Marty Jensen and Laren Naiman are the chairwomen; Judy Bulow from the Tattered Cover’s children’s literature department is the speaker. … “The Faces of UpLIFT” is the theme for Colorado UpLIFT’s annual gala, which is expected to draw 700 guests to the Adam’s Mark on Friday night, including Michael Bennet, the new superintendent of Denver Public Schools.

The fourth annual Gary Plumery Golf Tournament, held at the Pinery Country Club, raised $20,000 for Developmental Pathways. That’s a 25 percent increase from last year. … Helen Hanks passed the president’s gavel to Lyn Schaffer when Hearts for Life, a guild of the American Heart Association, met for lunch at Il Fornaio in the Denver Tech Center. Dianne Bartlett and Artemis Khadiwala-Donian chaired the noontime function with help from Kimi Porterfield, the restaurant’s event manager.
