Detective named officer of year
Detective Randall Speaect has been selected as the town of Castle Rock’s officer of the year.
Speaect, an eight-year veteran of the department, was promoted to detective a year ago. He has since worked on crimes such as check and credit-card fraud. He received the award from the Castle Rock Rotary Club.
“He’s an exceptional example of what we would like all our officers to be,” Sgt. Scott Claton said.
Senior Center to mark 25 years
Celebrate the silver anniversary of the Aurora Senior Center with music, refreshments and door prizes. Staff will share stories about the center, starting with its birth in 1980, and also offer a glimpse into the center’s future.
The open house is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 7 at the center, 30 Del Mar Circle.

Lease allows for revegetation plan
A lease agreement between Jefferson County Open Space and the Colorado State Land Board will allow the re-growth of native vegetation along the southwestern border of Rocky Flats.
About 60 acres along Colorado 93 southwest of the former nuclear-weapons plant has been designated as part of the north area conservation sites. The 30-year agreement costs $45,000, which is covered by a U.S. Department of Energy grant.
Jefferson County Open Space also has entered into a license and management agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to encourage re- establishment of native riparian vegetation on the 60-acre parcel to benefit wildlife.
Fire district to unveil memorial
The Larkspur Fire Protection District in Douglas County will unveil a Fallen Firefighter Memorial during an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 8.
The memorial, built by volunteers using donations, features a statute of a firefighter.
A dedication service for the memorial is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the main fire station, at 9414 Spruce Mountain Road in Larkspur.
The event will include station tours, medical evaluations and free flu shots, as well as displays, a fly-in by a medical helicopter and free refreshments. For more information, contact Lt. Charles Walden at 303-681-3284.
