American Greetings Corp.: $27.54, up $2.57 (10.3 percent): The 100-year-old greeting-card and gift-wrap maker on Thursday reported a second-quarter profit that beat analysts’ estimates of a loss. Net income fell to $3.24 million, or 5 cents a share, in the quarter ended Aug. 31, from $6.91, or 10 cents, a year earlier, the Cleveland-based company said in a statement. Sales slipped 1.2 percent to $387.6 million from $392.1 million. American Greetings was forecast to have a loss in the quarter of 3 cents a share, the average forecast of four analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial. In the third quarter, the company expects profit of 70 cents to 75 cents per share. Analysts expect the company to earn 72 cents.
