Spadea serves one up
OK, so he’s not Joe Namath, and his bold guarantee is not making national headlines, but Vince Spadea’s public vow to rise from No. 56 to the top 10 is making some ripples in the tennis world. Spadea, 31, recently signed a contract with his sports psychologist, John Murray, that “guarantees” he will reach the top 10 – barring injuries – for the first time. He sent out a press release, complete with photos of his contract. “I know on paper it’s improbable,” Spadea said, “but it’s not impossible. I’m jumping on this fast and furious. My career window is nearly closed, and I don’t want to end it knowing I didn’t give it everything.”

Crow sings; Lance won’t
Singer Sheryl Crow will perform a free concert Sunday in Austin, Texas, the adopted hometown of her fiancé and Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong. The concert coincides with the ninth anniversary of Armstrong’s diagnosis with testicular cancer. “We’ve always had parties or celebrations on that day,” Armstrong said Thursday. “It was just a way to do something for a city that has done a lot of things for me.” Armstrong said he plans to address the crowd, but will leave the singing to Crow. “I would be too nervous in front of a crowd like that,” he said.

Roy attempts to make save behind bench
Former Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy has taken over as coach of the Quebec Remparts, the junior hockey team he co-owns. Roy, also the team’s general manager, fired coach Eric Lavigne on Thursday after the Remparts got off to a 1-4-0 start in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. “I believe I can bring passion to the team and to its players,” said Roy, who will make his coaching debut tonight against St. John’s.
