Sterling is a step closer to winning 250 call-center jobs to be provided by an Ohio-based auto-insurance company.

Safe Auto Insurance, a Columbus-based consumer-direct insurance firm, has moved the northeastern Colorado city into “round three” in its site selection process, according to an e-mail sent Wednesday by Timothy Edgar, the Logan County Chamber of Commerce executive director.

Safe Auto is looking to hire management and human-resources workers, offering an average salary of $35,000, according to a Sept. 28 Sterling Journal-Advocate report.

Any infusion of jobs will “boost our economy (and) lower our unemployment,” Edgar wrote.

Edgar and other Sterling economic-development officials did not immediately return phone calls Wednesday afternoon.

Safe Auto currently markets the state-required minimum-limit personal automobile-insurance coverage in 12 states but not in Colorado, according to its website.

If Sterling is picked, it is unclear whether the company would begin offering coverage in Colorado.
