After watching the Jaguars game, I was impressed by the defense, especially the line. Is this the best defensive unit in the league, or should I wait a couple more weeks to ask the question?
— Aaron Bill, Markleeville, Calif.
I think we all have to wait awhile before making any grand statements. And that goes for grand statements about any unit in any category around the league. However, the Broncos’ defense has been outstanding and is certainly near the top of the NFL’s elite at this point.
I think Charlie Adams is outperforming Ashley Lelie every week. How many catches and yards does Charlie have in comparison to Ashley? Would Broncos coach Mike Shanahan ever make Lelie the No. 3 receiver? Remember, Lelie has a lot more minutes played than Charlie to date.
— Brian Ray, Denver
Lelie has 10 catches for 108 yards, and Adams has eight catches for 98 yards. Neither is putting up big totals. But yes, I think the team would like to see more production out of Lelie soon. He is a big-play player who hasn’t had any big plays yet. As for Adams pushing him, if he plays well, he could be promoted at some point.
Do you think this talk of the difficulty the Broncos have playing in Florida is a little overboard?
— Trey Doak, Laramie
The Broncos just solved their regular-season woes in Florida, at least for now, by beating Jacksonville.
I noticed that Keith Burns is wearing No. 51. That had me wondering about John Mobley. Do you know where he is and what he is doing these days? Has he recovered from his injury?
— Joe Harrington, Belton, Mo.
Mobley is a very popular former player. There has been much Mailbag interest about him since he was forced into early retirement because of an injury. He is living a quiet and private life after football, and he is said to be enjoying himself.
With the play of Darrent Williams against Kansas City and Domonique Foxworth’s game against Jacksonville, is it safe to say Lenny Walls will see his playing time diminish?
— Matt McMullen, Buffalo, N.Y.
The Broncos have a very deep cornerback situation. When Champ Bailey and Williams are healthy, they may have the best group of four corners in the NFL. Like Foxworth, Walls will see a lot of time in a backup role.
