D.J. Williams seems to be invisible this season after making lots of tackles and big plays last year. Has his performance dropped off, or is it just the nature of his switch to the less glamorous strongside linebacker position?
— Dave Pegg, New Castle
He isn’t playing much in nickel situations. And nowadays, defenses are in nickel situation much of the game. Linebacker Ian Gold has been a nickel stalwart. Williams has been good this year but he is just not getting as much playing time. But since the defense has performed so well, it’s difficult to argue with success.
What do you think is the main reason for the Broncos defense’s success in holding the Jaguars to a total of 12 yards rushing from scrimmage?
— Dro T., New York
A great push from the defensive front. The front four is creating havoc and is the inspiration behind this great defensive play. Fred Taylor had nowhere to go last week.
I noticed that Keith Burns is wearing No. 51. That had me wondering about John Mobley. Do you know where he is and what he is doing these days? Has he recovered from his injury?
— Joe Harrington, Belton, Mo.
Mobley is a very popular former player. There has been much Mailbag interest about him since he was forced into early retirement because of an injury. He is living a quiet and private life after football, and he is said to be enjoying himself.
With the play of Darrent Williams against Kansas City and Domonique Foxworth’s game against Jacksonville, is it safe to say Lenny Walls will see his playing time diminish?
— Matt McMullen, Buffalo, N.Y.
The Broncos have a very deep cornerback situation. When Champ Bailey and Williams are completely healthy, they may have the best group of four corners in the NFL. Like Foxworth, Walls will see a lot of time in a backup role.
Four weeks into the season, what will your prediction be on the outcome of the AFC West?
— Adrian, Mexico
Well, in the preseason, the pick was the Chargers over the Broncos. I do think the Chargers will be there all season, and the Broncos are fortunate to have a win against them already. But at this point, with 12 games to go, I think Denver wins it. The defense is too good and the offense will sparkle if it remains efficient and ball controlling. San Diego will make a run, but makes it as a wild-card team. But, again, check in at the midseason mark. This all can change.
