Once a lucrative market, the sale of Internet domain names has seen better days. However, a Boulder activist hopes to fetch thousands of dollars – maybe millions – with the sale of vote.org.
Evan Ravitz, 53, a longtime politico who once spearheaded a failed initiative to allow voting by phone, has owned the vote.org domain name for more than a decade.
This week, he sent letters to both major political parties notifying them that the domain name is up for bids.
“I really never thought of it as an investment until the last few years when people started making offers,” he said.
Ravitz’s agent estimates the site will go for $25,000 to $2 million.
But Ted Chamberlin, an analyst for Gartner Inc. in Stamford, Conn., said it’s not likely to go for more than a few thousands dollars – $50,000 at the most.
“We just don’t see a lot of companies or organizations willing to pay much more than a couple of thousand dollars anymore,” Chamberlin said.
