Few pre-vote woes seen across the state

Unlike this time last year, the secretary of state’s office is reporting few pre-election problems throughout Colorado. Saguache County has 105 people who didn’t get a question on their ballot, but the county clerk is printing new ballots that should go out in a day or two with an explanatory letter.

Douglas County’s ballots had a contradiction of what type of pen should be used to fill out the forms, but that too is being fixed. Additionally, Boulder County is dealing with a crease that runs through the Referendum C box on its ballot.

Both sides’ signs gone in Wal-Mart issue

In Westminster, where the fight over a proposed Wal-Mart will go before voters in less than two weeks, police have arrested one man and cited another for allegedly pulling up pro- and anti-Wal-Mart yard signs.

Westminster police spokesman Wayne Read said officers Wednesday night arrested Westminster resident Max Ford near the site of the potential Wal- Mart, at West 72nd Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard. Richard Mayo, the head of a group championing the Wal-Mart, said he complained to police after noticing a large number of his group’s signs missing or defaced. Officers set up surveillance and nabbed the culprit, Read said. Ford was being held on suspicion of criminal mischief and criminal tampering, among other things.

But the sign sting didn’t end there. Thursday afternoon, officers again conducting surveillance cited Charles Branum of Arvada for allegedly heisting an anti-Wal-Mart sign. Branum was issued a summons for theft, Read said.

Neither man appeared connected to the organized efforts to support or oppose the store.
