Half the morning team, with Murphy Huston, on 101.1-FM, Myers has led the typical life of a radio vagabond, beginning in Murfreesboro, Tenn. With a personality often described as “ebullient” and pronounced verbal skills, since she landed in Denver in 1983 she’s bounced from KLIR to KMJI to KPBI to KMJI to KIMN to Florida to KOSI. As they have for five years, Myers and Huston share the KOSI mike weekdays 5 to 9 a.m.

What was your first job in radio? That was at WGNS (“Good Neighbor Station”) in Murfreesboro. It was an internship that turned into a

full-time job. We read obituaries, dog reports, swap-and-shops. My dad got really mad because I wanted to quit college. “You’ll regret that later,” he said. He later admitted he was wrong.

What if life in radio hadn’t worked out? I wanted to be a newspaper writer but I didn’t do well with that pyramid writing. Before that, I wanted to be an elementary-school teacher.

What was your worst moment on the air? It was around Halloween. I worked for a station where there were no personalities. We read from cards. The night guy left, and I was on the air. I didn’t notice that he crawled into the studio on his belly, dressed as a reptile. He waited until I was reading the weather, then he popped up in front of me. I screamed and screamed. He turned off the mike and I never went back on, never said anything about it. Nobody called the police, which worried me even more.

A typical morning for you? I’m up at 3 a.m. and out the door by 4 a.m. I could sleep later, but I feel like I have to turn on the news, have breakfast. John (her husband) makes my life really, really easy. He does all the cooking.

What’s it like dragging Murphy Huston (left) every morning? I think we’ve got great balance. We’re so different. I’m sure I annoy some people no end. He’s not as easygoing as he sounds and I’m not as hyper as I sound. We’ve been together five years; it’s like having a work husband. I spend more time with him than I do my real husband.

What’s the program’s involvement with the community? The big push is Adopt-a-Family with the Volunteers of America. We profile a family, then listeners call like crazy. They buy gifts for needy families. Most of the time it’s, like, socks. Listeners step up to the plate. This year, we expect to help more than 300 families, starting in December.
