The Department of Regulatory Agencies has hung up on the Direct Marketing Association and tentatively selected Longmont- based Data Protection Group LLC to operate the Colorado no-call list.

The department has been seeking a company to take over administration of the list when its contract with current administrator InsightAmerica expires at the end of the year.

A committee reviewing proposals from five companies last week recommended that the state begin negotiating a contract with Data Protection Group.

The recommendation brings to an end efforts by the Direct Marketing Association, which also sought to run the list. A subsidiary of the trade group, Stamford, Conn.- based Interactive Marketing Solutions, was among the companies that applied to run the list.

The group already maintains no-call lists for Maine, Pennsylvania and Wyoming, but its connection to the marketing industry raised questions as to whether it was appropriate for an association that included telemarketers to run the no-call list here.

The Colorado no-call list is self-funded and does not receive any state money.
