The Colorado Chautauqua in Boulder passed a significant step toward making it the metro area’s first National Historic Landmark on Tuesday when the Landmarks Committee of the National Parks System Advisory Board voted unanimously in its favor.
“While we are two steps away from final designation, this was the substantive consideration of the nomination,” Colorado Chautauqua Association executive director Susan Connelly said in an e-mail Thursday.
“Two of the 10-person committee had been to Chautauqua in conjunction with National Trust for Historic Preservation events and spoke highly of their experience here,” she said.
Chautauqua’s nomination still will have to pass through a full Advisory Board meeting in January and get Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton’s endorsement after that. But Connelly said she expected “smooth sailing” because of the amount of support.
