Dustin Albright ran for 174 yards and three touchdowns as defending Class 2A state champion Faith Christian defeated visiting Burlington 58-8 in the preliminaries.

Playing in Arvada, the Eagles (10-0) built a 30-0 lead after the first quarter.

Albright opened the scoring with a 44-yard run, then added scoring rushes of 10 and 14 yards.

Tom Payne, John Hegarty, Mike Cardenas and Jeremy Lewis added touchdowns for the Eagles. Payne had two and Cardenas scored on a 22-yard interception return.

Burlington, which got a touchdown on a 73-yard run from Rodrik David, ended the season 6-4.

Elsewhere, Holy Family won on the road in Pagosa Springs, 45-27. Coupled with Kent Denver’s 49-0 victory at home against St. Mary’s and Platte Canyon’s 34-20 victory at Hotchkiss, the Metropolitan League went 4-0 in the first round.

Also, Buena Vista defeated Eaton 26-7 as Vance Ray scored three touchdowns on runs of 15, 4 and 1 yard.

Roosevelt erased a one- touchdown deficit in edging Colorado Springs Christian 16-7.

Platte Canyon joined Holy Family as the only road teams to win in the first round.

Brush, which edged Monte Vista 14-13, and Roaring Fork, which beat Lamar 21-12, were other first-round winners.

Class 1A

Andy Love’s three touchdowns propelled two-time defending state champion Limon over visiting Nucla 53-6 in the preliminaries.

The Badgers, in improving to 10-0, won their 36th consecutive game.

Tyler Ververs added two touchdowns for Limon and Tyson Liggett scored on a 78-yard punt return.

Elsewhere, Brian Leonard threw for two touchdowns as Dolores ousted Hayden 34-21.

Three road teams came out on top, led by Wray’s 56-7 crushing of Rocky Ford. Akron won 40-6 at Rye and Byers had the highest total of the day in a 62-28 victory over Paonia.

Also, Del Norte downed Calhan 43-14 behind Jeff Heller’s three touchdowns; Lyons ripped Sanford 49-8 and West Grand squeezed past Sargent 27-25 on Chase Underbrink’s 45-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Class A 8-man

Shane Hawks and Bryan McConnell scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Stratton rallied to defeat visiting Flagler 36-32 in the quarterfinals.

Zach Schmidt ran for 182 yards and Roy Erbert threw for three touchdowns for Stratton. Daniel Fagerlund ran for 126 yards for Flagler. Defending state champion Haxtun defeated Wiley 41-6 behind Cameron Ham’s 199 yards rushing and three touchdowns, and Granada won 28-19 in Swink in other action.

Class A 6-man

Defending state champion Hi-Plains opened the quarterfinals with a 54-32 home victory over Revere. Woodlin won on the road at Kit Carson, 69-54, as quarterback Harry Klausner ran for five touchdowns and passed for five.

On Friday, Idalia rocked Weldon Valley 58-18 and Pawnee won 32-18 at Peetz.
